Ava & Sophia’s First Birthday Celebration – A Sweet Twin Cakesmash Photoshoot

I first photographed sweet Ava & Sophia as newborns, so naturally, welcoming them back to the studio I first photographed sweet Ava & Sophia as newborns. So, welcoming them back to the studio for their twin birthday photoshoot felt incredibly special. Over the past year, they have grown from tiny, sleepy bundles into busy little personalities. Being able to capture that next chapter is always such a privilege.

To begin with, we started the session with relaxed family portraits. After all, a first birthday isn’t just about cake. It’s about celebrating the whole family and how much can change in twelve short months. Meanwhile, the girls were full of curiosity. One minute they were cuddling in close. The next, they were wriggling off to explore. At this age, expressions change in seconds. Because of that, I focus on capturing those natural, in-between moments.

Next, we moved into the styled setup. The set featured a soft pastel palette and a rainbow backdrop. It suited their bright, joyful energy perfectly. Front and centre sat a pink buttercream cake. It was sized just right for two eager pairs of hands.

As expected, a twin cakesmash photoshoot brings double the personality. These two certainly delivered. One sister confidently plunged straight into the frosting. In contrast, the other paused to inspect every swirl. Eventually, she decided it was worth the mess. Their different reactions made the session even more fun to photograph. There were frosting-covered fingers and cheeky grins. There were also shared glances and spontaneous giggles.

Finally, we finished with a shared bubble bath. By this stage, the cake chaos turned into splashes and laughter. In addition, it gave the girls a chance to reset. We captured a few more sweet, connected moments. Tiny hand-holds. Soft smiles. Even a quick sisterly kiss.

Overall, it was the perfect way to celebrate turning one. Joyful, slightly messy, and completely unforgettable. Happy first birthday, Ava & Sophia. It was such an honour to capture it all. 💕
